Crowns
Crowns, also known as caps, completely cover a tooth -- restoring a normal shape and appearance. You may need a crown to:
Crowns can be made from metal, porcelain fused to metal, resin, or ceramic materials. They are usually suggested when other procedures cannot produce pleasing results.
Sometimes an in-office same-day temporary crown can be made, but it takes more than one visit to receive a permanent crown. The following steps would be used to give a permanent crown: the tooth is prepared for the crown, moulds are made of the tooth, you are given a temporary crown, and then the permanent crown is placed in your mouth later. Permanent crowns can have a long life if you take care of them.
Bridges
Bridges, also known as fixed partial dentures, replace missing teeth with artificial teeth. Bridges can be made of gold, alloys, porcelain, or a combination of these. The surrounding teeth are prepared, and then the bridges are anchored on. After that, a false tooth is joined to the crowns and the bridge is cemented onto the prepared teeth. Only a dentist can remove a fixed bridge. The success of your bridge depends upon its foundation. Remember that keeping up on oral hygiene to keep remaining teeth healthy is particularly important if you wear a bridge.
